Well that was the message promoted in the press of the 1950s – as the Queen, the Duchess of Kent and Princess Margaret all chose off-the-peg dresses from Horrockses Fashions for various overseas tours. Exactly which dresses they had chosen was top secret until they had worn them. Then the dresses would be available in the shops.
The only difference between the dresses worn by the royals and those available to the average woman was the royals had two to three fittings – and possibly the odd alteration to trimmings.
More will be revealed on Thursday at the Fashion and Textile Museum.
